i am quite confused with what i have read regarding the µ-law non-uniform quantization.
from source A:
dynamic range capability of input improves with increasing µ.
from other source:
µ-law reduces the dynamic range of the signal.
since our aim is to reduce the dynamic range of the signal, should we use smaller value of µ? why is µ=255 chosen as the standard in some countries then?
You should use smaller mu to reduce the dynamic range. Mu or A , dynamic range improves with mu or A. It is a standart to use mu=255; Generally Europe uses A law but america and japan uses mu law.
