I think I am rather late but I have just noticed your thread.

In any case, you remind me my MS thesis in communications I did about 30 years ago (spring 1979). At that time, it was said:

"Demodulating a Double Sideband Suppressed Carrier signal (DSB-SC) is much difficult than demodulating a Single Sideband Suppressed carrier one (SSB-SC)”.

To me, this has sounded as a dilemma saying: Receiving more information (taking twice the bandwidth of the SSB-SC) makes the detection be harder!!!

So my project was to prove that restoring the baseband from a DSB-SC is indeed easier than from a SSB-SC.

It took me about 4 to 5 months of successive failures. On my last day in the lab and to my big surprise, my demodulator has decided to work properly though in theory it shouldn’t. It shouldn’t work because my last design was built around a conventional phase locked loop (PPL) which I modified a little bit to lock with the suppressed carrier. I had almost no hope that it will be the solution I am looking for since according to its theoretical analysis it has to fail as all my previous designs I made. So what did happen? An unintentional error was introduced in the circuitl which gives in turn the correct feedback to let the VCO be locked with the received signal that doesn’t have the carrier component. Obviously when I discovered the reason, I re-studied the project to find out its optimum configuration in respect to time settling, lock range... etc.

I skip the story of my life and say: This simple DSB-SC demodulator is not known till our days. Hence, the graduate students (as you are) still hear the above dilemma from their Professors in communications.

I had lately the idea... since I am getting old... to help a student to build it also as a thesis. I don’t think it will be difficult to understand its details because its real power is in its simplicity. Otherwise practical DSB-SC demodulators exist now but only as digital systems and they are relatively costly (>$50 vs $1), as the dilemma says

In the past, I was able, when necessary, to build secure links for my personal use by taking advantage of my simple demodulator and the benefits of DSB-SC systems (in comparison to other modes).

But I still think, I came here too late and you are almost finishing your thesis these days.
