I once opened up the 12V battery sitting on my lawn mower (a self-starting model).

It contained six cylindrical cells, each 2V. Each was about the size of a D cell, but they could not be everyday rechargeable D cells. They must have been lead-acid type.

I have never seen such batteries for sale individually, but you might try places which carry lawn mowers, power tools, motorcycles, etc.

By the way, 2.5 AH is an amount approached by today's AA rechargeable nicads or nimh.

Are you certain you cannot make them fill your need?

Gates used to make D-cell form factor SLA cells.
I'd bet you can find them on eBay, or lesser grade
same size.

Two D-cell NiMH could give you 10AH - I have
half a dozen 10000mAH cells for hurricane prep.
