With a USB drive compatible with your Windows computer, you can now plug the drive into the USB port. These ports are typically located on the side of a laptop and the front or back of a desktop. If you are using USB-A, be sure to insert the USB drive in the correct way to avoid damaging your computer.

When the USB drive is first inserted, Windows will install the necessary driver software to use the USB drive. Next, a dialog box should appear. Select Open folder to view files. How do I format a USB drive on Windows 10?

Most USB flash drives will be preformatted. If the drives are 32GB or less, they will be in the FAT32 file system. If they are larger than 32GB (for Kingston's USB flash drive capacity set, this would be our 64GB capacity or higher), they will be located in the exFAT file system. FAT32 is limited to a maximum storage volume of 32GB, so it cannot format this file system on any storage drive larger than this.

After you plug the USB flash drive into your computer, you can copy and move files, format, or rename the drive. You can rename the drive by opening File Explorer and clicking This PC in the left pane. Then right click on your USB drive and choose Rename. NTFS is the standard format for Windows boot drives, but external Windows exFAT or FAT32 allows you to use USB drives on Mac and Windows computers. You may want to keep the drives as exFAT or FAT32 so they can be used with the Mac, but you can also format them as NTFS file systems. To format to NTFS, open File Explorer, and click This PC in the left pane. Then right click on your USB drive and select Format and NTFS, but be aware that all data on the drive will be deleted, so make sure you have another copy.

If the USB flash drive has been formatted for Mac (AFS+) but you want to use it on your PC, you must format it as an exFAT, FAT32, or NTFS file system, but note that all data on the drive will be deleted.

After formatting the USB drive, it should be ready to use. You can view the contents by opening File Explorer and selecting your USB drive from the list on the left panel.
