attached is the a motor i have taken from a CD-ROM drive. i believe the motor is to spin the disc.

by taking a look at the right picture, i guess it's a BLDC motor.

anybody has information about this type of motor... how to go about driving it?

all CD-rom drives use BLDC motors to rotate disc
Use search option to find some info around here, or better try with R/C links on the net.

Example project is here:**broken link removed**

It uses BACK EMF signal to learn rotor position and drive the magnetic field - it's named a sensorless design.

CDrom drives have got hall effect sensors, so you can use them instead BACK EMF signal.

visit rc groups forum u will get a lot of information for using bldc cd rom motor.u can rewind them.and for controlling these motors study the mcrochip document an857.
