so ive decided i really want to take on a massive project and design my own PCB board and make it into a firewall. been trying to do some research and i have no idea what micro controllers are used in firewall circuit boards . can anyone point me to a source of where i can find out that information? i would be grateful

Take apart or just use any router. That already has everything you need including the firewall probably running on linux and supporting telnet. Once you reverse engineer everything that goes into a router and how to modify the firewall.. you will have learnt more.
