for simulation purposes, would a metal oxide surge arrester give me similar overall results as that of a metal oxide varistor for clamping a voltage?

Yes. A metal oxide surge arrester is basically a varistor (MOV). The name changes according to the application, size, technology and ratings. Just use a varistor with similar specifications.
