I asked this question earlier, about using memory of around an MB in a microcontroller project.

which solution should I use

Can you be more specific. I don't really understand your question.

External memory ???:?::?::?:

it all depends on the type of microcontroller and type of memory too, some varieties of 8051 support bank switching and may go to a mb of memory, or if you need to interface a flash memory you can interface a mmc card using spi bus, and many memory modules are available in spi interface have a few mb of memory space.
