I had found many times that the main memory is occupied by some unkonw programs , after the linux machine turn on 2 ~ 3 days continuously. And I had check that with "top", and found that "memory used" and "memory free" are not as expected , cuase I had closed all the applications opened previously.

OS : Redhat 8.0
Mem : 2GB
CPU : P4, 3GHz

do u have also encounter such strange problems?

Have you tried googling the process names? That quite often clears up any mystery.

yes, I had only run a job... this job finished after 1day , and then I start another job, then I closed this new job... then I use "top" to check the memory used, it became to such condition.
I only start 2 jobs, and stop them all, and then memory was lost...
