Hello Everyone,
I found this really cool video which shows how to measure the inductance of an inductor using an oscilloscope & a signal generator.

It is also refers to a site showing the derivation of the circuit. That is found here.

My question is, why did they choose 1/2 in the ratio equation?

(Vscope/Vgen) = 0.5

To to discover a component's value...
it's a handy tactic for us to attach a measuring circuit, then alter something while we watch for a reading to drop by 50 percent. It simplifies the calculation.

You can choose any other percentage change, but then the math gets complicated.

Hi,

Maybe also because of the 1-2-5 voltage selector of the scope.
Example: if you compare a 2.5Vpp (Ch-A) with 50% = 1.25Vpp (Ch-B)
Then turn the voltage selector for A on "1V/div" and the selector for B to "0.5V/div) so on the screen both signals appear in same hight = 2.5 div pp

It's more difficult to adjust for 70.7% or 63% or 37% ...
