car performance data

I want to make a device using mircocontroller that would be able to measure a car's 0-60 and 1/4mi time. What microcontroller and accelerometer chip would be sutable for this project? How hard would it be?

Is FPGA a better choice than MCU? i'm more familar with verilog than asm.

There are other ones not using the accelerometer! They just use the engine rpm to calculate the acceleration. Engine RPM can be took from a inductive pickup near the spark plug HT line, or it can be Techo output.

In drag racing, engine RPM is not an accurate indication of speed.
Have to consider clutching, tranny, wheel spin, wheel diameter, etc ...
Accelerometer would work. May need 3-axis unit due to car's (hopefully small) pitch/yaw/roll.
Or how about a radar gun, or a pavement doppler velocity sensor, or a fifth-wheel on the rear bumper?
