hi every one can i power mcp23017 using 3.3v supply my dspic works on 3.3v supply. in data sheet it is given as follows

Operating voltage:
- 1.8V to 5.5V @ -40°C to +85°C
- 2.7V to 5.5V @ -40°C to +85°C
- 4.5V to 5.5V @ -40°C to +125°C

i cant understand the meaning my doubt is can i power the ic with 3.3v will it work correctly?

regards
kalyan

yes, unless you want to work with the e type device.

In short, yes.

The more thorough explanation follows.

The following section from the MCP23017/MCP23S17 Datasheet may clarify any confusion:

MSP23017.JPG

The MCP23017 should function fine with a VDD of 3.3V, which falls comfortably within the 1.8V ≤ VDD ≤ 5.5V at -40°C ≤ TA ≤ +85°C I-Temp range, if the device operating temperature remains within these stated limits.

The I and E nomenclature, refer to Microchip's Industrial or Extended range version of the device, where the Extended range version typically encompasses the Industrial range operating characteristics as well.

According to the MCP23017 product page:

MSP23017PP.JPG

The MSP23017 is only available in an E or Extended range device, which has an operating temperature range of -40 to 125 °C, if the operating temperature of the device remains within the -40°C ≤ TA ≤ +85°C I-Temp range, the associate operating voltage range is 1.8V ≤ VDD ≤ 5.5V. If however, the operating temperature of the device at times exceeds the +85°C upper limit of I-Temp range, while remaining in the -40°C ≤ TA ≤ +125°C E-Temp range, then the operating voltage should be restricted to the 4.5V ≤ VDD ≤ 5.5V range.
