Material to do soldering on?

What material should i put on my workbench for soldering? Think carpet would probably burn.

Cut required portion of 0.5inch Plywood and lay on the working place which will act as an insulator, which is also harder than ceramic, and will also resist heat to some extent from the molten solder and the Iron. If you work on daily basis, the wood will last for abt 7-8 years. Goodluck
