Hi, what does it mean by macro cell and standard cell? I often hear it from Astro manual. what are their differences?

macro cell usually means hard IP
standard cell is often provied by foundry, they are in same height.

macro need been placed manually in floorplan,
standard cell is combinational logic and dff cells. they are placed automatically.l

well, can you give me some examples of macro and standard cells? thanks

RAM, ROM, ANALOG parts, etc--- MACRO CELLS
USED for APR, with fixed horizontal and vertical pitches, with same height---STANDARD CELLS

Macro cell: They have to be designed by analog designer. They always design the required circuit first and then simulation by spice. They must emulate on real environment. If their function is met the spec., they can be treated as macro IP.

Standard cell: They always be provide from fundry or IP vendor. There are 0.35um, 0.25um, 0.18um or 0.13um .......and so on. You have to design your digital circuit by hdl language. And synthesis and P&R by tools automation.

If you speak in custom design perspective....standard cells are the blocks that are arrayed to form some logic....Macros are set of logic to be placed at the interface

Macro cells are designed by Custom designers and some time standard cells also used in the macro cells.

Standard cells are basic primitives that are used during the RTL synthesis. So that the tool can create the optimized netlist.
