The "C" was added on later chips to denote CMOS technolgy; however, the 28256 is also CMOS. Functionally, the 28C256 and the 28256 are the same.
The "M" is a manufacturer's ID code - it doesn't mean anything when it comes to the chip function. Below are data sheets for two other manufactures' version of the 28C256.
