Hi,
any recommendation on 5V regulator (low dropout) with high current rating (around 3A) ?

find MAXIM on global electronics they are the one up to speed on these matters
 

Use LM2576.
It can provide up to 3A 5Vdc output.
Input ranges from 7Vdc to 40Vdc
