Hi, all,

does any one here have the experience on the RF VGA design? or have any material on the topic. For example, the gain range:42dB, step: 3dB?

You can design the stage for maximum gain and use digital attenuators for gain scaling.

You haven't specified the frequency range.
Take a look at LMH6504 (to 150MHz)

They are offering for free (if you buy a VGA) an evaluation board.

There are many VGA with digital/analog gain control interface:
