Looking for Potentiometer that can be set digitally but operate passively?

I wonder if this technology exists.
Imagine the following situation:
During setup/calibration I can power the circuit and "tune" my potentiometer using some type of digital interface. (e.g. I2C)
However, during operation the device is fully passive and will not have a source of power. Thus, the potentiometer would need to "remember" the settings and operate passively.
Currently I use standard potentiometers, but tuning them manually is way too cumbersome and not practical.
Ideas?
 

there are motor driven pots, or you could go discrete with a multi-position switch that is servo driven
 

There used to be some very expensive motorised pots from Penny & Giles used on mixing consoles.
 

Don't see any option but a motorized pot if you have no power available.

What pot resolution do you need?

Could you tolerate a small, long-life backup battery to power the pot?

Resolution may vary, a huge limitation is the absolute lack of power.
This is a hard requirement.
