Looking for information about POV clocks

i saw a youtube video of pov clock and want to build my own. i googled it online but the only pages i found were the ones already telling you what components to solder and the code was already provided. i'd like to build the clock from scratch, using my own head. i'd like to know why the POV clock do what they do. can anyone recommend any links where i should start reading about it? any help is appreciated.
