lm317 battery charger

hey can anyone tell me that can this transistor be replaced in the ckt and if it can be then by which component and how will the circuit then work .An immediate reply is requested.

Im pasting the link which is :

The lm317 is not a transistor , it is a voltage regulator ( ajaustable type).
It would not be possible to replace this with anything other than another regulator.
You would have to do a considerable amount of change to the circuit if you were going to use a transistor

Thnx for d reply but im not talking abt the regulator LM317 but i am talking abt the transistor BC547. Can it be replaced by any other componenet and if so then how will the ckt work .Also plz tell me the path of the current flow when the ckt is in working condition.

In this circuit you can use any other NPN transistor - it should work well.

But why would you want to replace it?Surely not availability or cost?
