Is your keyboard going to have an uncommon principle of operation? If so, what is the principle?
Is it a full QWERTY keyboard or a smaller one?

i suggest tsop1238 from VISHAY company for receiver and normal IR led transmitter.
you can use RC5 Protocole.

HI

I recommend you use IRDA method to transfer data from keybord to PC since all other methode are slow

The easy way is to use TI TIR1000 IC and the micro UART

I dont recommend you to use IRDA software since the MAC is a bit compliceted to be use on a simple microcontroller.

But some company like microchip has fully software support for the MAC layer
