All of the schematics for commercial PCBs with Ethernet ports tend to use the same number scheme so that you know the appropriate signal pairs (1-2, 3-6, 4-5, 7-8) and match it up with the color code. It is also critical as far asbeing interoperable with other devices and the various modulating schemes used for 10M or 100M (MLT-3) or 1000M. And, as the link negotiations with Normal Link Pulses or Fast Link Pulses are Unipolar Pulses, they also need to be on appropriate pins to be expected/observed by the link pair device.
In short, use the same convention as other Ethernet devices if you expect things to work and you want to simplify your debugging.
