this is sivakumar,GDS2 format is un readable format and which is accepted by most fabs and ther format is ASCI format which is readable but not secured.So that genarally we are doing stream out in GDS2 format

GDS2 is a standard format in which the complete design is submitted to the fab

this format supports the more levels but which cannot be supported by oher formats which are planer

gdsii dump

GDSII is the worldwide recognize format to store layout design data. Its in binary form.

if you using unix,

od -h file.gds can view it hexa form.

anyway there is alot of free scripts to let you dump the GDS into ASCII/Text enable to let you see all the coordinates and datatype of particular layer.

Its a industrial standart format. Will send to fabrication in tape out process to convert into .DIE format before Masking.
