Impulse response's flip in convolution

Hey,

Why is the flip of the impulse response needed during the convolution process?

This is according to Duhamel's integral formula.
Integral of f(tau)*h(t-tau)d(tau).
-tau means flip.

One more thing, in pattern matching using polynomial multiplication (with FFT) (T text, P pattern), as we flip P when multiplying (T*flipped P). is it related in any way to the flip we perform on the impulse response?
 

You can flip another component instead
h(tau)*f(t-tau)d(tau).
 

Was that an answer to the question if the two are related?
If so, how exactly?
