IF filters (the coils, you're calling transformers) are essential for a superhet receiver, because they provide the selectivity. You'll find at least two or three of them with a classical receiver. They may be partly replaced by ceramic IF filters. The IF gain (10e5 or more) is usually distributed among multiple amplifier stages between the filters.
