I am having trouble coming up with a way to identify objects in a range of about 6'. If you have any ideas I would greatly appreciate it.

You want tp be able to tell when some objects are within six feet of a detector?

Read about RFID.

Well, I've been reading up on RFID and I don't think it would work. I need the tag to work without having to be taken out of say a pocket and not being really big where its not comfortable to hold.
