to do it hardware you need comparator(s) bunch of resistor just to compare 1 value
yes i can use microcontrollers
infact im very good at controllers
i started with 8051 and then worked alot on 16 series and 18 series pic microcontrollers
ive also interfaced lcds and digital sensor working on spi protocol
controllers and interfacing is not an issue 4 me
MCU can be impressive
if you have worked n pic 16 and 18 then you must have ideas on your own
you can have artificial intelligence based on mcu
using dspic you can do image processing that can be implanted in an autonomous robot, etc etc...
you can also go for PIC32
