MPLAB is the best. Maybe you should try MPLAB 5.70, much easier to work with.

There you can find cvasm16 assembler. Perhaps you like it better than MPASM

What do you mean by "besides AVR studio"?
AVR studio is not for PIC but only for Atmel AVR.
Microchip MPLAB is for PIC.

Mplab is cool man, THey make the chips, they should know! You aint gonna find a better assembler,
Never had a problem meself! Pluss you got the sim.
