i have a problem with lcd

i have aproblem with lcd.in my project ,i use atmega 16.we have to get a number betweem 0&9 ,and show it on lcd and 7seg.
we use PORTB for input
PORTA for lcd
PORTD for seg
but both of the devices show numbers between0&3.but i can't find out why it didn't show numbers between 4&9.
plz hlp me
