Hyperterminal (horrible program!) sends each character as you type it, it doesn't wait until you press 'enter' to do anything. Whatever you have it connected to might not respond until it sees the code for the enter key but that depends on what it is and how it is programmed.
What do you have connected to the COM port? "Enter" is just another character or two. What happens with it depends on how the receiving device is coded to handle it.
