There are many power transistors. You need to know also know npn or pnp, Vce, Hfe required, bandwidth or switching time needed, etc...
In general, I use the MJE3055T or variant for generic power transistor application of more than 1A for npn circuits. Make sure to use appropriate heat sink with heat sink compound
and fan if necessary to cool the transistor.
