How to simulate a network drive on Windows XP/2k?

Hi friends,

I have following problem:
I have a software which expects a license file on a network drive.
On Windows NT I can share a folder of a local drive and reconnect
this folder as a network drive on the same machine. On Windows XP/2k
this method works only if the pc connected to a real network.
If I cut the real network connection, the simulated drive gets also
inaccessable. Is there any tool or trick to simulate a network drive on
these systems?

1. Install VMware Workstation. It adds 2 Vitual Ethernet Adapters to the system, so you will be always connected and you can share own files.

2. Few days ago I configured old 10Mbit Ethernet Adapter (Realter 8019 as I remember) and when I set maually 10Mbps 10baseT mode diode on card ligthts all the time - means always connectd. I don't know how it is seen by WinXP.

I'm always connected to the network so I didn't tested my ideas. But I think you can try.

Use Microsofts Loopback Adapter

and connect a network drive to
\\127.0.0.1\(insert name for shared dir without brackets)

I tried the solution with Microsoft Loopback Adapter: Successful!!!!!
But I will also try the VMware solution.

subst for network drives

If you're only interested in having a new drive letter, say X:, point to some directory on your PC, try

subst X: c:\my\directory

in a DOS box

D:\NSV>subst /?
Associates a path with a drive letter.

SUBST [drive1: [drive2:]path]
SUBST drive1: /D

drive1: Specifies a virtual drive to which you want to assign a path.
[drive2:]path Specifies a physical drive and path you want to assign to
a virtual drive.
/D Deletes a substituted (virtual) drive.

Type SUBST with no parameters to display a list of current virtual drives.

You'll have to put it in a Run registry key to have it repeat automatically at each start-up.

Hi Vomit ,i don't think it can work , GeneralMadDog need a network drive, but the drive redirected by subst is a local drive.
