how can i measure the inductance of a coil .

Re: inductance of a coil

hello judfid,

'inductance ' of a coil of...

which core? air/iron/ferrite?

what is frequency of interest ?

50hz or 60hz. thanks

Added after 3 minutes:

large iron coreb Thanks.

Re: inductance of a coil

Preferably with a LCR meter. If you don't have it, apply a low AC voltage and measure voltage and current and calculate the
inductance. If the impedance isn't mostly reactive, you can use a series resistor and determine the complex impedance from the
three voltage measurements (can be solved geometrically).

inductance of a coil

I would put a capacitor across the inductor, add a series resistor and use a signal generator and oscilloscope to find the resonance.

judfid,

for 50/60hz iron core coil ,
use a 'digital lcr' meter set with 50/60Hz measurement frequency .
this is the easiest method.

other methods exist. but it requires measurement meters and computation .

inductance of a coil

hello,

When your iron core inductor has no air gap, inductance depends on AC current through the inductor. When inductance is critical, best is to measure it under similar conditions as when it is in the actual circuit.

when using an oscilloscope and also measure current (voltage across a small series resistor), you can also assess the losses and non-linear effects.

When measuring large inductances with reasonable current, keep in mind the EMF generated during current interruption can be large (electric shock, damage to equipment).
