How to make an electronic compass using Spanish dip needle?

What do you guys think of the spanish dip needle & can I make one electronic?

You can use silicon compass chips.
Take a look in those kmz51 and 52 from Philips.

ThanX a lot! I checked out the material. It's ok,but not good enough for what I had in mind. I'll have to disign my own electronic compass. If anyone's interested I could keep them posted on the progress.

ise TCM2-20 from www.pnicorp.com check also other products from honeywell semiconductor division,check magneto resistive sensors and buy the compass modules from digikey.com.

This product looks more promising. BTW I was thinking about rotating a coil hooked up to a amplifyer (also rotating) ,then to a Light Emiting Diode (also rotating) when the coil crosses the magn. field lines the LED would light up. I do not know electronics & my elec. guy just quit,so it will be some time before that project is done.

dont know if you realy must buid the sensor and alla but I think the KMZ51 circuit is the easiest whay to go.
