How to interface a 3V micro to a 5V device ?

mixed voltage

Any ideas on interfacing a 3 volt micro to a 5v device ? I have looked at options using logic chips and resistors.

I am interested in a minimal component and DIP package option ;-)

3V device output can be conneted to 5V device input directly.
3V Inputs:
you can use non-inverting logic level down shifter/convertor CD4050(MC14050, HFE4050...). There are 6 gates in this IC. Just supply it of 3V rail and you will be fine !!!

Would the 4050 work bidirectional ?
