If you want to use complete Dictionary offline simply install dictionary by following commands. Open terminal (Alt+F2 and type: terminal-gnome) and copy the following commands in the terminal:

sudo apt-get install dictd
sudo apt-get install dict-gcide
sudo apt-get install dict-moby-thesaurus

After installing the Dictionary you have to do the following settings in the dictionary:
Open Dictionary and go to Preferences, Click the "Add" button to add a new dictionary.

Now Enter the following details.
Description: Local Server
Transport: Dictionary Server
Hostname: 127.0.0.1
Port: 2628

Then click on add button. Then Edit => Preferences select Local server.
That's it.

take software centre in ubuntu 11.10
in search option type Dictionary (you will get a lot softwares list)
install the required dictionary by reading the review.
it is as simple as that.....

i like golden Dictionary.

If you want to install it, you can open the terminal (Cntrl+Alt+T), then type:
sudo apt-get install goldendict
or do it from the software centre as I mentioned above...;-)

As yura717 said installing those packages can be a + to a dictionary like Golden Dict.
all the best

Have you tried using the command line as i mentioned,
sudo apt-get install goldendict
even if you are getting the error.....
Disconnect the internet.. restart ububuntu.. reconnect and try. If you can acces other programs. then you will be able to use it. All the best

You can find the dictionary here (Applications => Office => Dictionary)

Most probably it is because of some temporary communication error.....
or the software centre may take some more time.......
or during that time internet was not connected.....
or some other program may be using all the bandwidth available
or Some other program installing. (this won't usually give problems.... but chances are there)
