how to include a sensor to my circuit?

i try to create a sensor.I'm using latch(74HC573) which is connected to a 68000 DIO TRAINER BOARD
..how can i include those sensors(IR receiver/transmitter) to that circuit?..can i just series both transmitter and receiver before or after the LED or what?..:roll:..below figure is my circuit.. design 1.png
 

oh ya,i almost forgot about that..:razz:
