how to go digital comm & fpga

How to move to go to the digital communciation & fpga field ( hdl - verilog ) .
could any body please send me info to get into the field. and also i know something abt gsm and wimax and a litttle bit. can i do a very small project on these alone at home. if so can u tell me where i get some projects in this field.

I think it would be better that those people who have worked on FGPAs or DSP and embedded communication system on them start a thread where they give tutorials.

This would help a lot of people as you would have observed, these days most people want to test their comm algos too.

And the thread can ofcourse serve as a future reference too, so you dont have to go repeating it again and again
