How to generate a HEX file - Microchip serial EEPROM

Hi,

I want to use PICkit 2 to program an external EEPROM out of circuit (Microchip 25LC1024).

PICkit 2 Readme file describes electrical connections between the two.

What I can't figure out is how to generate a HEX file so I can load it into the EEPROM. MPLAB IDE has all support for the chip showing in red (not available).

Any advice?

Hex file is well documented format, see e.g. Intel HEX - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, there are also tools to convert binary to hex. Where's the data originated from?

Data can be a pure binary file or a .wav file, depending on application.

Could you point me to some utilities that can generate a hex file that PICkit 2 would understand?

PICkit is surely understanding standard Intel hex format, that's used for all Microchip flash files. Google for binhex converter.
