i have a very old cd rom "teac-56e" 6x ,indeed it became so slow while reading some cd and many time it failed to read..

i want to know what makes the cd rom gets old and how can i fix it

If you really want to hold on to a 6X CD-ROM you can try cleaning the lens and check for jamming in the mechanic parts.

Re: How to fix cd-rom

Dust and dirt are the biggest problem. Case fans and power supply fans pull air in from the front of the case (and some air through the drives) and blow it out the back. A lot of dust gets pulled into the drive openings, and some of it can cause read problems with the LED read head.

Take a can of compressed air, such as used for blowing dust off of camera lenses. Carefully insert the tube of the air can into the front of the drive and move the nozzle side to side while blowing out the dust.

There are also some cleaning disks that are commercially available for cleaning the drive lens. Chose and use such disks carefully, some can scratch the lens.

Dirty, scratched disks can also slow down the disk read. The drive has to retry the read several times to get all the data through the gunk. There are disk cleaning kits that can help. There is even a kit that will repolish the read side of the disk. (It is worth noting that the label side of the disk is the most fragile part of a CD - if you scratch or otherwise damage that side, the disk is pretty much permanently gone. Be sure that, if you try to clean or polish a disk, you only work with the shiny side opposite the label side.)

Finally, sometimes the read LED just begins to dim or the drive electronics begins to fail. When the head has to re-read several times, you see it as a slowdown of the drive. There is nothing to do in this case except look for a new drive - replacements are cheaper than repair.

U mean that the aging of the cdrom has no solution ...

Indeed all what can be cleaned..i clean it !!!

Regarding software you can try : Badcopy pro

If cleaning of the optics is without success you can try to play with that little poti which should be close to the laser unit (somebody knows its exact purpose?). But be careful and remember the original adjustment.

Another attempt is to lubricate the guide pillar for the sliding carriage. Use a resin-free oil.

Re: How to fix cd-rom

There are three electronic adjustments that tend to drift out of spec with age: Laser power, tracking and focus. In addition, bearings (rotary and linear) wear and cause increased friction, possibly to the point of struggling to move accurately.

Usually, the pot near the laser adjusts the the laser power. Laser diodes age just like LED's do. Turning up the power is one of the ways of keeping old CD players going. However, the diode power is adjusted automatically by a feedback mechanism so the ouput intensity should not vary much unless the diode is almost dead or the feedback circuit itself is aging. In that case, turning up the power can help, but might shorten whatever life is left in the diode.

Adjusting the tracking and focus servo pots might help and is less likely to cause harm.

Take a look here:

I have kept an old technics CD player going (a very good one - worth the effort) by polishing the linear guide rails every few months. This one has a linear motor to position the head - older CDROM drives often do as well - and the delrin sleeves gradually rub off plastic onto the metal rails.

A really thorough mechanical clean may help - use spray electronic cleaner on the gears and rails, then a non-conductive lubricant like PTFE.

Cheers,

Most error in any CD-Rom from laser lens
some Cd-Rom the lens weak and other the beam laser is shifted
