The idea to find BER by simulation/practice is to get the reference input and the output and compute the error. This will take a lot of time to do. The other methods are
(1) Derive BER from SNR
(2) Use simlified simulation model
BER is the ratio between the errornous bits and the correctly received bits while frame error rate is the ratio between the errorsnous frames and the correctly recieved frames
plz tell me if this is true or not, if i want to plot BER vs SNR of a FEC communication system, for example, i introduce 1000 bit at the input, then i compare them to the output, i find that 30 bits are incorrect. the BER is then 30/1000 =0.03? is that true? or i must send for example 10000000 bit in the form of frames of 1000 bits each and then calculate the ber?
@Girly_girl...... Y axis is the error rate in bits you are having. For e.g. for some SNR = 5 on x axis, you transmitted 1000 bits and received 10 bits incorrect then your error will be 10/1000 = .01. This .01 will be value on the y axis so the point in the graph will be (5,.01). I hope this makes it clear.

SNR is the signal to noise ratio. If your SNR is high, error will be less and if your SNR is low error will be high. So, depending on your problem, you have to simulate and keep some SNR. For that SNR compare the error in bits you are having and then your BER = error in bits/ total bits sent.
