How to design digital microwave radios?

DIGITAL MICROWAVE RADIOS

I FIANALLY GOT INTERESTED IN THE INTERNET !!
I started recently with a small consulting job dealing with point to point communications of streaming data . And i started considering DIGITAL MICROWAVE RADIOS .. But they are very pricy .Around $6k to $8K
So i would like to stick my nose in these type of designs ..So friends does anybody could indicate me where to find information on typical architecture of these RADIOS or some open projects .. how to design them ..etc ..Please
