how to design a simple handset..plz help me

Hi everybody,

I need some help for my final year project. I need to design a handset that can send sms and also make a voice call using GPS capability. I use GM862-QUAD/PY as my GSM modem. I dont know where to start and dont know what type of microcontroller or etc. I looked at the GSM modem's manufacturer website looking for the datasheets etc but nothings can help me where should i start since this is my fisrt time doing this type of project...Can anybody guide me what should i do for the first stage at least i can start with set up circuit for sending sms first before doing a voice call...thanks very much
