How to count the quadrature encoder pulses and communicate to pic microcontroller

I am having two servo motors, from the servo drive i am getting a,b, phase quadrature outputs, how to communicate the encoder outputs to pic 18f4520 micro controller totally i am having 4 phases ab of first motor and ab phase of second motor. Is there any ic to count the encoder ab phase pulses and communicate to microcontroller through spi are i2c. Kindly help

Have you considered using the 18F2431 or 18F4431, these PICs have an inbuilt peripheral quadrature counter interface..

there are a number of PICs with a built in QEI interface, e.g. the dsPIC33EP256MU806 has 2 QEI interfaces

if you have a device without the hardware QEI you can use software, e.g.

I have used similar code with a PIC24FJ256GB110 using "interrupt on change" to detect changes of the A and B signals
