Copyright is automatic when the work is created in a country that is a signature of the Berne Convention (pretty much everyone). While not required, to add a great bit of legal protection and prove the date of your work if you ever have to sue someone over infringement print off a major part of your work and have it notarized at a local notary. You will have the same protection of a copyright registry and not have to worry about a bunch of forms and fees.

Copyrights relate to the actual content of a work, so long as your work is designed independently of the similar work your work would be seen under copyright as a new work. Patents however are quite different in that regard.
Copyrights only protects the expression of the idea, and not the idea itself. So if someone takes your idea and recodes his own implementation, then there is no copyright violation. Because of this, copyrights are only good for music, video and books (at least in theory). The only good thing about copyright is that no registration is required. Anything that is created by you is copyrighted. You do not even have to stamp on the copyright word, just have to prove that you created it.
Protection of ideas and concepts falls under patents, and that requires your idea to be evaluated by the Patents Office.
A basic patent in the US that isn't thrown back a bunch of times will likely cost you around $20,000 when you factor in application fees and lawyer fees.
Using a lawyer the process isn't all that troublesome, as long as you can articulate your idea in writing quite easily.

While the rest of your post is spot on I have to disagree with this. Often the actual implementation in code of an idea is what sets it apart from its competitors. This is where copyright has its teeth preventing others from taking your implementation or basing another implementation on code by you.
