how to check polarity single phase half bridge IC from component?

and What is the meaning of symbol " ~ “ on the component ?

It is single phase bridge rectifier circuit. So you need to connect the stepped down AC at the symbol side and need to obtain the output from the side where + and - symbol is represented.
