how do you break resin electronics

Dear All,

Is there any way to break (open) electronic part that potted with resin ?

rgds

Alcohol is used for dissolving resin.

An epoxy resin is commonly used, which can't dissolved by alcohol. I heard, that some people have used X-ray to figured out what's inside of the block. This can be risky approach, depending of the kind of circuit, and if it is sensitive to hard radiation

Resin that when we use to make soldering ? If it is so , Isopropil Alcohool
( Propanol ) is enough to clean.

Or if you mention "lack of resin" which is used on a PCB being as solder resist , it's much more difficult.

I heard about that there is a special solver for it but I never couldn't find. Instead of it , Carbon-tetra-clorur or Tri-clore-ethylen might be used.

i've used methyl ethel ketone to dissolve the potting on a highvoltage module, but i don't know what this does to the insulation in transformers

its pretty nasty stuff and may not be easy to get

Hi,

It is not easy to disolve the epoxy (resin).
If it is a small module, I would start by taking resistance measurements
and noting them. Then use a small cutter and start cutting the thing
bit by bit, being more carefull when you reach the components.

Good Luck, since you need it.

Bye.

Not so easy...

If real resin of epoxy type, you kan try heating up module to
120 - 200 degree celsius (lower temperatur if equipment has a
elecrolyt capacitive inside - or explode...) under long time
(couple of days, weeks). The epoxy break down slowly under
heat to more or less powder.

(think long time heating expose FR4-board...)

Second methode:
Using _dry_ concentrated acetic acid,
the epoxy break down and swell (huge!) depend
of filling material in resin. But, swelling force can break
away components and break transformer...
so - good idea to mecanical take away swellng
epoxy every day (use plastic gloves and good ventilation
on this job - concetrate acetic acid are very dangorus
on unprotected skin and giving deep burning damage without
sense... is to late - concentrate sulphur acid are healty
compare to organic acid - concentrate sulphur acid burning
immediately and can fix before deeper vounds in skin ).

This metode take time - couple of weeks or so if resin
layer are thick. Acetic acid beat around 0.5-1 mm/day
on epoxy or so.

Easy test: drip dry organic acid on resin surface and see
if swelling after short time. if swelling, its resin a epoxy
type and you can using acid methode to break up unit.

- best way are dismantlig epoxy with drilling mm.
(ie use dremel or dentist drilling tool ) so much you can
before heating or organic acid solution of resin.

Very importent at organic acid are really _dry_
ie. water free, or you can recive more or less
corrision on componets in you euqipment.

If resin based on silicon or higer order plastic
- only way dismantling with drilling...
