How realize "autoset" function design of scope?

I make a home oscilloscope,I need to realize"autoset" function,like tekronix oscilloscope "autoset" function.
which step or method use to detect input wave in only several seconds time(2-3s)?

if I try every timebase and every gain range,it will resume very large time(such as 1 minutes),so I need a good method to auto detect input wave.
anyone help me?
