how PRBS generator tests signal integrity of high speed links?

I am designing a sFPDP protocol for FPGA.. I am not understanding why PRBS generator and Polarity control blocks are used in GTP transceivers.. I didn't find any details on it.. Can any1 please explain me how these blocks test & improve the communication links???
