How many large engineering companies exist in UK?

Is it 4?....Dyson, ARM, Rolls Royce & JCB?

(and does JCB design/build its own engines?)
 

That's a question for the DTI not Edaboard. The answer is a much bigger number but you need to further define 'large' and 'engineering' to get an accurate answer. Take an example, Bombardier, do you classify them as 'large engineering', see their web site:
